Everything you need to know about boiler maintenance

In this article, we answer the most important questions about maintaining the boiler. The central heating boiler, which is often in the meter cupboard, on the balcony or in the attic, must be properly maintained. After all, without the central heating boiler, you are left with cold water. In addition to a cold shower, this also means an unheated home. So not entirely unimportant. But what exactly do you need to do to ensure that your boiler continues to work properly?

Annual maintenance of the boiler

To ensure that the boiler continues to work properly, it is important to maintain it annually. You can clean the outside of the boiler yourself. The inside of a boiler can be cleaned by a technician or plumber. It is possible to conclude a maintenance contract for this purpose, so that it can be kept up to date periodically. The costs for annual maintenance are a maximum of around €175-€200 per year, depending on the type of maintenance contract.

How do you refill a boiler?

Refill the boiler? Yes, that's important. It ensures that the boiler continues to work properly. This is because when the water pressure is less than 1.5 bar, the boiler will not work optimally. Refilling the boiler is done like this: 1) turn the room thermostat down, 2) wait until the temperature of the boiler thermostat is less than 40 °C, 3) disconnect the boiler from power, 4) turn the filler hose on the water tap, 5) fill the hose so that no more air can reach it, 6) close the water tap, 7) connect the filler hose to the filler tap, 8) open water tap, 9) turn the filler valve for a quarter open, 10) when the pressure has reached 1.5 - 2 bar, valves can be closed, 11) vent radiators, 12) refill if necessary, 13) reconnect the boiler to power and 14) turn the thermostat back on.

How do you clean a boiler?

The outside of the boiler is fairly easy to clean by yourself. You do this by removing the jacket from the heating system with a damp cloth. It is best to use only water for this purpose, but a standard detergent is also possible. To maintain the inside of the boiler, an appointment can be made with a technician or plumber.

How can you vent a central heating boiler?

Venting the radiators in the boiler is also important for the boiler to function optimally. To do this, you need a radiator key. This is how you prevent damage. Furthermore, you should start with the radiator that is farthest from the boiler and works more and more upwards. Also, don't forget to check whether the boiler needs to be refilled after venting. The loss of air bubbles could cause the water pressure to drop, which is of course undesirable.

Legal obligation to maintain the boiler

Maintaining the boiler is NOT required by law. However, as of April 1, 2023, a central heating engineer or central heating installer will be a protected profession. It is therefore punishable to work on boilers without proof of expertise. Technicians or installers must therefore have a so-called CO certificate. Of course, there are requirements and checks on professional competence.

What does an installation company do to maintain the boiler?

One installation company ensures that the maintenance of your boiler is done periodically and provides an experienced and trained central heating engineer to home. So you don't have to worry about this anymore and you can outsource everything to the central heating engineer. Your energy company can order our Guide engineers to do this. You can contact your energy company directly to inquire about this. If you have specific questions about the work of our technicians, you can contact us by phone or email at 020 323 2764 or service@guidion.net.
