A boiler technician is someone who maintains the boiler to ensure that it functions properly. This way, no malfunctions occur, the heating works and hot water comes out of the tap. But what exactly does a central heating engineer do and how do you become a central heating engineer? We'll tell you!

The activities of a boiler technician

During the annual maintenance visit, there are a few activities that are carried out to ensure that your boiler works properly. Among other things, carrying out repairs and maintaining the boiler. In addition, the technician can also carry out work on the pipes.

Other activities include:

  • Cleaning the boiler (and heat exchanger);
  • Performing and adjusting measurements;
  • Checking whether the safety requirements are met;
  • Replacing the gaskets;
  • Carrying out “additional work” if necessary. This includes installing (extra) brackets, replacing the expansion tank, the automatic air vent, filler valve or overflow valve.

The required certificates

To be able to work as a central heating engineer, someone must first obtain the appropriate certificates. These are:

  • Minimum MBO level 2 (maintenance mechanic/
    service technician or installation engineer) or demonstrably the same qualifications (years of experience);
  • VCA-VOL certificate;
  • A Co-craftmanship certificate;
  • OK CV Energy Service Specialist (ESS). This is not a requirement, but an advantage.
